"Antibiotic treatment for gonorrhea or Chlamydia would become more readily available in Oregon if a bill passed by the House Monday becomes law.

House Bill 3022 would allow doctors and medical practitioners who diagnose patients with gonorrhea or Chlamydia to prescribe antibiotics to the patient's partners without an examination of the partners.

At least 11 other states make this kind of 'expedited partner therapy' available, said Rep. Michael Dembrow, D-Portland."

Chlamydia, gonorrhea top list of STDs - The Clinical Advisor

"Chlamydia and gonorrhea were the two most common infectious diseases in 2007, hitting young women and minorities especially hard, the CDC announces in its annual report on sexually transmitted disease (STD) (accessed April 15, 2009).

The more than 1.1 million new diagnoses for chlamydia comprise the most cases ever reported to the CDC for any condition.

Consequently, annual screenings are recommended for all sexually active women younger than age 26 years and for older women who have new or multiple partners or other risk factors. County health rankings mixed - DailyBulletin.com

"Los Angeles County residents are less likely to die of lung cancer, suicide or car crashes than residents of most other California counties - but more likely to die from heart disease and diabetes, according to a state health report released Thursday.

The annual report compiled by the state Department of Public Health and the California Conference of Local Health Officers, offers a mixed picture of Los Angeles County's health between 2005 to 2007.

The county ranked among the 10 best in prenatal care, preventing death from lung cancer and fewest fatal car accidents per person. Some health experts attributed those results to public policy decisions like public smoking bans and better compliance with seat-belt and child-seat laws.

But the county ranked 48 out of 58 in deaths from heart disease and 46 in diabetes.

And when it came to sexually transmitted diseases, Los Angeles residents still are contracting chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV at a higher level than those in other counties."

Better health; take charge: Take precautions, know the facts about STDs : Health and Fitness : Memphis Commercial Appeal

"Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) spread through sexual activity. They don't spread on toilet seats, in hot tubs or on shared eating utensils. Douching, spermicides, washing and urinating are not ways to avoid STDs.

Sexual activity -- oral, vaginal or anal sex -- can transfer a bacteria or virus from one person to another. Common STD bacteria include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. STD viruses include herpes (like fever blisters) and the human papillomavirus (HPV -- the genital warts virus). The HIV virus that causes AIDS is less common, but dangerous."
