Better health; take charge: Take precautions, know the facts about STDs : Health and Fitness : Memphis Commercial Appeal

"Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) spread through sexual activity. They don't spread on toilet seats, in hot tubs or on shared eating utensils. Douching, spermicides, washing and urinating are not ways to avoid STDs.

Sexual activity -- oral, vaginal or anal sex -- can transfer a bacteria or virus from one person to another. Common STD bacteria include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. STD viruses include herpes (like fever blisters) and the human papillomavirus (HPV -- the genital warts virus). The HIV virus that causes AIDS is less common, but dangerous."
